Military Tribute Banners

It was born from tragedy but has morphed into an enduring tribute of honor for our nation’s veterans.
— Bob Podurgiel, Post Gazette 2018

Castle Shannon Borough is proud to honor our men and women who are or have served this country through our Military Tribute Banner Program.

The Military Banner Tribute Program began with a single banner in Castle Shannon in July 2009. This banner was made to honor the late Marine Sgt. Ryan Lane of Castle Shannon who was killed in Afghanistan. As a way to honor the many veterans of Castle Shannon a website was created by Harry Munson listing all Castle Shannon veterans. Banners were designed for each and soon hundreds of banners lined the streets of Castle Shannon honoring those veterans. These military banners are now a common sight in most of the surrounding PA communities as well as nationally.

The Military Tribute Banners are on display between Memorial Day and Veterans Day every year with banners being displayed on Castle Shannon Blvd., Route 88, Poplar Ave, Willow Ave, and Rockwood Ave.
